Scanmar Announces the Launch of its new “E-Rudder” Emergency Rudder System for the Monitor Windvane

San Leandro, CA — September 8, 2020

Scanmar International, Inc. has announced the delivery of its new E-Rudder Emergency Rudder System, which converts a vessel’s existing Monitor Windvane wind steering system to an autonomous emergency rudder, completely independent of the boat’s wheel or tiller steering which may have become damaged. The E-Rudder System utilizes the existing Monitor Windvane’s legendary stout mounting structure, and allows the mariner to quickly install a larger steering rudder OVER the existing Monitor water paddle.

In an emergency, the E-Rudder is attached to the Monitor servo pendulum blade and is held in place and an ingenious system of adjustable Dyneema bracing lines. Once installed, the E-Rudder can then steer the boat to safety via three different methods:

  1. Hand steered by moving the Monitor vane’s existing counter weight linkage. Adjustable lines can be led to the linkage to allow steering from virtually anywhere in the boat.

  2. The Monitor Windvane’s existing large light air airvane can be used to steer the E-Rudder as a wind-powered emergency rudder.

  3. A small electronic tiller pilot, such as Scanmar’s Pelagic Autopilot can be attached to the Monitor’s gearset and will steer a magnetic compass course home. Because of the leverage of the linkage, the average power draw of this system is about 1/10th of that of a typical electric autopilot, and important consideration in an offshore emergency.

“This new E-Rudder System is a breakthrough for the offshore sailor in terms of both durability and affordability. Monitor Windvanes are known as being pretty “bullet proof”, and now this framework also serves as the platform for the emergency rudder”, said Mike Scheck, President of Scanmar. “The E-rudder system will retail for $1,195. Combine that with an efficient tiller pilot like our Pelagic Autopilot, and you’ve got a fully autonomous electric and/or wind powered get-home set up for about $2,000.”

“Another advantage to the E-Rudder System is its stowability”, said Scheck. “The entire system fits into a zippered valise which will stow flat in the vessel.  That compares very well to other systems that take up a lot of valuable space.”

Each E-Rudder Emergency Rudder System is designed, built, and tested in the U.S. in Scanmar’s San Leandro, CA facility. The new system is constructed of stainless steel.

E-Rudder Emergency Rudder Systems are ready to ship.

Scanmar Announces the Launch of its Redesigned AnchorRescue® System, “AnchorRescue II”, which Allows Boaters to utilize the Same Anchor Recovery device for different sized Anchor Chains. Device receives Patent Pending Status.

San Leandro, CA — September 16, 2019

Scanmar International, Inc. has announced the delivery of its redesigned AnchorRescue II anchor recovery system, which allows sail boaters and power boaters to recover their anchors that may have become tangled in the seabed. A revolutionary design breakthrough allows one AnchorRescue II device to be used on any size anchor chain ranging from 1/4” to 3/8”. Now, one AnchorRescue II system can be switched from one anchor to another, or even moved from boat to boat.

“The original AnchorRescue models were designed to fit a specific chain size. Our new kits are based on a design which accommodates the most commonly used chain sizes. Separate devices are available for larger chain sizes”, said Mike Scheck, CEO of Scanmar International. “This improves on a proven product, five years after the original design was delivered.”

The AnchorRescue II has received patent pending status from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, validating its unique ability to retrieve a boat’s ground tackle.

“This device provides an added layer of safety to boaters by saving the boat’s primary (and usually largest) anchoring system, eliminating the need to utilize the vessel’s secondary, often lighter backup ground tackle”, said Scheck. He also emphasized the value of being able to retrieve a fouled anchor. “Anyone who’s had to try to replace a large ground tackle system in a remote location knows it can be incredibly expensive if not impossible to do”.

Each AnchorRescue II anchor recovery system is designed, assembled and tested in the U.S. in Scanmar’s San Leandro, CA plant. The new system is constructed primarily of stainless steel.

AnchorRescue II systems are available now. The product will be demonstrated at upcoming boat shows, including Southampton, Annapolis, and METS. Dealer inquires welcome.
